This is video #4 of my series of Darling Harbour videos. On this video you’ll discover…
- The 5 step process I use before I sell any products on my website.
- Why it’s imperative you select ONLY the affiliate products with excellent customer service.
- Should you sell affiliate products that have money back guarantees? The answer will surprise you.
- The best places to quickly and easily search for affiliate products.
The 5 Step Criteria To Pick A Product
- Commission. Make sure you get a proper cut for your efforts or don’t sell the product at all.
- Quality. If the product or service isn’t up to scratch, ditch it! Don’t go near poor quality.
- Passion. You must believe in the product and love what it is about.
- Integrity (Reputation). Ensure the company you sell for is good. Do they look after their clients?
- Money Back Guarantee. No guarantee = no belief in the product! Don’t sell if you cannot warrant the product.
Here are 2 examples of resources for affiliate products:
Of course there are many places you can go that will be possibly better for you, but these 2 are a good place to get started at no cost or very little outlay at all.
And as promised, my affiliate program. It is currently on hold until my book is actually released, which will happen soon, but you can still join if you wish. Year Of The Affiliate – Affiliate Program

Another great video Sean!
Keep up the great work.
You are truly one of the most ethical and ’straight to the point’ internet marketers out there. I really admire that.
Can’t wait for the next video! =)

Hi, Sean,
Commission Junction doesn’t have Aussie dollar as an option so I think US dollar is the only option. Just curious, do you think affiliate programmes are not as popular in Australia as in the USA and other European countries? Or is it because Australia is still too young?
Hi Tess,
Affiliate Programs are still fairly popular in Australia, differences is more than likely due to larger population in the US and in Europe.
Sean
Part 2 of last comment:
Actually, I just found out I can’t register with Commission Junction without a website. Looks like you can’t choose good quality companies and sell high quality companies at the beginning of your affiliate career as those companies may also want to have high quality experienced publishers/affiliates with good resources to promote selling, is that right?
Hi Tess,
Yes, it can be true, some high quality companies may not automatically accept you as an affiliate in the early days, it can sometimes also be due to the country you are in as well. As a lot of the companies on Commission Junction are US based. Although, by contacting an advertiser you may find that they are willing to accept you anyway, as when you promote them it doesn’t cost them anything. If they don’t, you can always move onto the next one.

Have gone through the leaked version. Good stuff but a bit of a read. The full version with videos will definitely make it easier. I couldn’t find the free ad forum you mention in the book. Have you the url for it?
As for CJ, Tess just grab a free blog from wordpress or blogger and enter in the url. That should be enough.
CJ isn’t as easy to navigate around as Clickbank. As well as they require a tax form to be filled in. I presume that is because they have physical products where as CB is all digital.
Keep the vids coming
Graeme
Thanks Graeme.
I’ll cover the ads shortly. It wont be in the first lot of video’s but I am filming some more for you.
Thanks, Graeme,
I actually have a domain name but haven’t built the site yet. I guess Sean may tell us too using a blog instead of a website to save money but I feel a bit difficult to organize blogs. I think at the end of the day, I have to invest more time and money in order to have a serious return.
Hi Tess
You could be on the right track about the blogs. However I only recommend blogs for their user friendliness. There is more help coming to make the task much easier for you.
I have been following you for a while now Sean and you get better all the time with the way you present. Your method is getting easier all the time.
Thanks Sean and the team behind you keep up the good work.
Regards Richard Colum
Thanks Richard
Onwards and upwards for all of us
Cheers
Thanks Sean another great video making it easier for newbies like myself. Congrats
Hi Deb,
You’re welcome, Enjoy!
Sean
Hi Sean
Thanks for the great free content. Maybe I’m missing something but I just have a little query. In your emails and elsewhere you have referred to 3 free videos you have provided so far. However Video 2 and 3 actually say Pt 3 and Pt 4 on them, and on your website there’s a Pt 2 called “Removing Your Risk” which says Pt 2. So we actually have 4 free videos. Shouldn’t Videos 2 & 3 mean 3 & 4 and you haven’e emailed us about No.2?
Hi Ivan
Correct! I dropped video 2 from the emails, but still provided it for those who had the patience to watch them all. They all need to be seen but we decided to drop #2.
If I had numbered it the way you suggest (which I considered) some would still ask why I didn’t number it the other way.
Bottom line is that they are all there for you to watch. They are listed below the latest post in order.
Enjoy!
Sean
Hi Sean
I download the videos so I can go and do other things and then watch them later with the advantage of repetition. I hope I’m not been pedantic but when downloading the last video on this page which answers our top 3 concerns it is a copy of the earlier video “Select a Product.”
Hi Ivan
I cover over some areas that are similar but they are different video’s.
Make sure they have different captions at the top to ensure you haven’t got the same video downloaded twice.
Regards – Sean
Hi Sean,
How do you find products with at least 40% commission?
Cheers,
Helen
Hi Helen
There are many examples, but the easiest place to look is with digital products. I will cover this in video’s made available shortly for you to enjoy.
Even high ticket items many times pay high commissions. It depends on the profit levels on a product and if the product has factored in a ‘middleman’ or not. I have one (for instance) product that I pay 20% on and only to certain members. The reason being that I have priced the product to be affordable to the client rather than stack $50-$100 on top for a middleman.
Hi Sean,
I like the criteria you use. It helps out a lot as there are so many products out there it can sometimes be a little daunting.
Is there any possibility you can provide some kind of time line of your videos?
I am more than happy to wait; I’m just thinking over how many weeks, months, etc will these educational vid’s go on for…
Hi Cemil
Good point! I won’t put a cut off date on them as that would stop me for continuing with the free stuff that will benefit you
However, I can say that you will have good foundations already in 8 – 10 days from now.
Regards – Sean
Hi Sean
As you will be getting into using blogs, I’m sure your readers will be interested in something I have come across.
It is a traffic SEO plugin for wordpress. It looks pretty good. The only drawback is the wordpress needs to be installed on a host rather than a free wordpress blog. If anybody is interested in it they can contact me at geeslist@gmail.com
By the way it is free
Hi Graeme
There are many plugins and that one sounds interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Hey Sean,
Just wanted to let you know Im really enjoying the videos. Awesome…and I truly appreciate what Im learning to help myself make an income on the internet. One point I need to make though was a comment you made in pt 4. -Australia isnt a small country (New Zealand is a small country -I live there and my whole country will fit in the state of Victoria. )
Cheers
Hello Marlease,
Glad to hear you’re enjoying the videos.
You’re right New Zealand is a lot smaller, I more meant in terms of population though when compared to many other countries on the internet.
Sean
Hi Sean,
I hope this is okay to mention this, but any of your followers / customers that are watching your videos can also become an affiliate to our ebook website and we are offering 50% commissions on any Affiliate Sales.
I also checked today and we are number two (2) on the first page of Yahoo for the keywords “Instant Ebooks”.
Let me know if it would be okay to offer Affiliate registration to your video followers.
Hi Mel
I appreciate your observation and wanting to help me. I see you have copied some text from my affiliate signup page
People will locate that if they look for it. I casually mentioned it in the video’s (#2 or #3) and will make it available if the demand is there.
Hi Sean
The videos are awesome. Keep up the good work.
Virginia
Thank you, Virginia.
Enjoy the rest. They are coming along nicely.
Hey Sean,
Enjoying the videos… I found this one to be very useful & I like the 5 step criteria for picking a product. I think that it is very important to believe in the product you are selling, it’s all to often you see someone trying to sell a product that 1. doesn’t have any interest in it & 2. tries to pull the wool over your eyes by rambling on with useless information that isn’t even related to that product.
Thanks Sean
Hi Peter
It is important to sell the product for the benefit, not for the money. You have to know the product or service will benefit the customer, or at least benefit the customer if they take action with it.
Hi Sean,
Just a little bit confused. Whats the difference between your new YOTA ebook that you are launching now (leaked version etc.) and the old YOTA e-book you were selling a while back? Is it a new updated version or is it the same e-book?
Des.
Hi Des
I wrote a book in 2008: Year Of The Affiliate. It was about 160 pages.
I re-wrote it this year with many additions and updates. There are 2 versions:
Year Of The Affiliate 2.0 – The Leaked Version (131 pages)
Year Of The Affiliate 2.0 (Launching soon) (257 pages)
Hi Sean,
Thank you for all the emails and videos I am a beginner and at the moment Im still trying to weave my way around all this but the learning process is enjoyable.
Thanks Bell.
You are most welcome, Isabel
Hi, Sean
I like your selection criteria for affiliate product. That’s what I am doing at moment. Select good quality products with good reputation, and make research before promoting it. I will look for good product in Commission Junction and Clickbank as you suggested. Thanks for your videos.
Kind regards
JUN LI, Sydney
You’re welcome Jun, Great to hear you’re already taking action.
Sean
Hi Sean great videos, ive been trying to market online in the past without much success what are some free ways to market an affiliate product with using google adwords.
Cheers thanks mate
Julian
Hi Sean,
Great video. Thanks for the leaked version of YOTA, I now feel insipred to apply the techniques you so kindly present for all to see.
When you started out with affiliate marketing, did you write articles for Ezine which then linked back to an aStore, or did you take the more general approach by linking to affilate products through your own web site?
Thanks,
Elia Dimiropoulos.
You’re welcome, Elia
I did affiliate products and I did use articles, but mainly for SEO purposes.
Hi- I like the way you explain showing in detail how to do each step. It certainly makes it easier . I saw you in May this year with Shaun Stenning with Smart Online Profit Systems. I did not know a lot then about blogs and setting them up . I am gradually getting there but still struggling with some things. Looking forward to being able to promote the book . The blog we set up then was through iiabblog.com but the link does not seem to work now. I will be able to use my new blog I have set up to do it now.
Thanks again.
Jacalyn
Hi Jacalyn
Thanks. In regards to your iiab blog. It was set up to replace my uwcblog but may have been neglected. I had no control over iiab blog. You may make some sense from it in this newsstory about Geekdom.
I suppose this may be a “roadblock” as you call it. Above, you suggest taking a look at Commission Junction and Clickbank. Is there a way to see them without joining and providing a non-existent website? CJ requires a website to join it. I am working on the leaked version and reviewing your videos again and agian to put it all together. Eventually I will find it, just hoped with this note I could get a pointer.
Hi Fred,
You are able to sign up with Clickbank without having a website. Commission Junction on the other hand does require you to provide a website when signing up for the service. I have provided information on how to set up a free website that you can use for your CJ application. Hope this helps you
Hi Sean, well i am enjoying the videos, even thou as david said, it seems like a lot of info about what you are going to do, but not actually doing it. I’m sure you will deliver here sooner or later, i still enjoy listening to what is possible and that you make it sound like i have a chance, hope is a wonderful thing, i am prepared to listen i’m sure i will pick something up out of it. I always say that about seminars etc, even if you only learn one thing, its another step forward.
with anticipation…
xxx
Hi Mandy,
I am not too sure on what you are wanting me to deliver to you? The information provided here is free for everyone to learn from, have you taken action on any of the information so far? Have you watched all the videos? Let me know how I can help you further and I will certainly do my best
Hi Sean,
Thank-you for the five step criteria. It really makes it a lot clearer about what we should be looking for. I just have one question. Do you accept a lower commission for more expensive products?
I mean for products that cost anywhere between a few hundred dollars and a few thousand depending on what the customer buys?
Jazz Salinger´s last blog ..Finding Your Passion
Hi Jazz,
I think for a really high priced product a lower percentage probably is ok, as it still gives you a fair pay for the work you put in to promote it. But if the percentage is only like 10% I would be cautious, because that is less than people normally need to spend on advertising and I would guess something is not quite right.
Renee´s last blog ..Self Improvement Books – What Are Your Favourites
Hi Sean,
The 5 step criteria to follow when choosing an Affiliate product is very helpful advice, thank-you.
I see that it takes time to choose a product that is best suited to my needs but at the same time that is time well spent. I do think the money back guarantee is important for salse. It’s assurance for many people who are nervous about purchasing products online.
Jill Brown´s last blog ..Couples Marry at Common Law
Hi Sean,
I like that in your five step criteria the focus is not purely on the amount of money you can earn, but on the quality of the product and the customer service (Quality, Integrity, Guarantee).
Very often these parts get neglected a fair bit which leads only to short term success but not to a long term happy customer!
Renee´s last blog ..Self Improvement Books – What Are Your Favourites
Hey Sean,
Commission Junction seems like it might be better because of it’s selection of real brand products (as opposed to just e-books as on Clickbank), but I’m hearing that it’s basically impossible to tap into Commission Junction without first having a website. But, at this early, experimental point in my Affiliate Marketing journey, I really don’t want to set up a website. Is there any clever way to utilize Commission Junction without having to set up a site? I’m hearing that you can just give them a link to your Clickbank page (or something like that). Does that work? If not, is there any other options?
Thanks!
As far as I know, you will need some form of website Andrew, you might like to try some free website options like wordpress.com, squidoo or hubpages
