Online Content – Writing How People Read

by Sean Rasmussen on January 13, 2010

Copywriting TipsAny time you are writing online content – a blog post, an article, a web page or a sales letter, it is important to consider how people read.

There are several factors that have been identified as being essential for inducing the greatest number of visitors to actually read all the text on your website or blog. Here is a brief overview of the most important.

How We Read Online

As human beings, we read a book far differently than we skim through online content – and that is a key factor; we tend to skim through the page before deciding whether or not we want to invest time reading every word all the way through to the end.

Few people want to read a book online; instead they are searching for information. They want to quickly and easily ascertain whether or not the pages of your website contain the data they are seeking. Don’t make this difficult or time consuming; when it comes down to it, most internet users are lazy. Besides, the internet is supposed to save time, not waste it wading through lots of long pieces of text.

Distractions, such as an incoming email or IM message offer distractions that also make it less likely a reader will finish a long article or post.

Online Content – Style And Design Elements

Text pieces need to include white space. It’s a simple fact that when faced with a page of tightly spaced text with small font and run-together paragraphs, people simply won’t read it. It could contain some truly valuable or really interesting content but your visitors will never know because they will make it all the way through.

Here are some effective ways to design text that gets read:

• Group the text into small paragraphs with appropriate spacing between each.
• Use a font size that is easy to read (i.e., larger than 10 point).
• Skip the fancy fonts and stick with a tried and true sans serif such as Verdana or Arial.
• Use bold phrases sprinkled throughout to grab attention.
• Bulleted lists provide an easy way to read through a large amount of information.
• Refrain from using too much punctuation; particularly exclamation points!
• Dark text against a light background is easiest on the eye.
• Break up the text with graphics and photos.
• Add links, which appear in a different colour than the overall text font.
• Use fewer words to get across the same amount of information in printed format.

General Content Writing Tips

Think of your audience as you write. Not everyone knows the jargon of your particular industry or will appreciate a vocabulary your English professor would be proud of. Use short sentences and simple words that can be understood by any reader.

Limit the length of the pieces to no more than 500 words and articles to around that same number, wherever possible. Web pages can have more text but be sure you utilise the tips above so that blocks and paragraphs are appropriately separated and incorporate sufficient white space.

It is easy to shorten a piece if you include hyperlinks to pages that more fully discuss a particular topic. This is also a great way to build inter-site links, always good for page ranking SEO.

If you want your website visitors to read your online content, ensure that you lay it out properly and think about ways to get them from the top to the bottom of the page.

Many times I have to be reminded of these tips. Its so easy to fall into a habit of tunnel vision where you see only what you want to see and not the way the reader sees it. Thanks for the reminder.

Happy to provide you with the reminder Teasastips ;-)
Thinking about your readers when you write is very important, as that’s why you are writing…right!

Hi Sean,

I tend to skim read all online content, because, you’re right; I am looking to see quickly if that blog post contains the information I need. If it does; I’ll read it more fully. If not, one click and I’m out of there.

Also, pictures and videos always get my attention straight up. I think it’s important to give your readers information in a variety of formats; text, pictures, video, audio and anything interactive.

Hi Sean,
I’m learning to skim and get through on-line content faster. I did start out fairly slow and read everything but did not necessarily finish everything to the end.

I think it much better to focus on writing how people read. There are many helpful tips here for achieving this desired outcome. I can see why webinars are becoming so popular to teach people on certain subjects or product knowledge classes.

Hi Sean,
your tips are very good – but changing the font in a wordpress theme is a bit tricky. So in order to change it for all blogs (and not manually every time) I need to change the theme – or am I missing a much easier way here??

Hi Renee,

It isn’t easy to change the font on some Wordress themes. However, you can change the font size in your computer and it does affect the font in your WordPress theme.

Just go to Tools, then Options, then Content. You can change the size and style of the font to whatever you want. I used this when I needed to make the font larger on the theme I was using. I hope this helps.

Hi Jazz,

that’s a great tip. I was not aware that changing my settings locally would have an influence on my wordpress theme. I will definitely give that a try. Thanks so much!

If you use the TinyMCE advanced plugin and go to settings, you will be able to add a “font family” button to your WordPress editor :-)

Thanks for that advice. I was having terrible trouble the other day trying to change my font size on one of my blogs. I will take a look at this plugin.

This is exactly why I like reading your posts Sean. They are short enough to keep my attention with lots of spacing for ease of reading and they are not filled with jargon I do not understand.

Its funny because when I read a newspaper or magazine, I always start at the back (much to my husbands amusement) and its the same on a sales page, I usually go to the bottom first and then back to the top to skim the page.

Some great tips provided there Sean. Writing online content definitely requires a different way of thinking in order to have the best chance of people reading what you have to say.

Bulleted text seems to work a treat as it’s quick and easy to read and in today’s hectic world.

This provides the essential list for how to write good content and page ste up (the Look & Feel)
It is tempting to want to have all sorts of fancy things on a site – different fonts and so on – but as most people want to get to the nitty gritty of what we have, then most of the tricks etc are superfluous.
Images, videos are great as they underline the message – not interfere with it.

White background and black text is also a good point – using colours for text or background does not take into account many readers may be colour blind – and that is not an unusual incidence.

Thanks for that tip on changing the font on the computer. I didn’t know that this is a way to change the font on the WordPress Theme. I’ll try this tip for the next article I write.
