Choosing Affiliate Marketing Programs

by Sean Rasmussen on February 17, 2010

Affiliate Marketing ProgramsWhen deciding on which affiliate marketing programs to participate in, the decision shouldn’t be made lightly. By carefully weighing your options, whether planning to promote one major product or many different products, you’ll ensure that you’re making a choice that will be a profitable and enjoyable one.

Here are some things to consider when deciding upon which affiliate marketing programs are right for you and your internet business:

Affiliate Payments

Quite a few questions should come up when you look at the key piece of affiliate marketing that interests you – the “getting paid” part! Here are questions to ask before getting going:

• How much will you get paid per sale.
• How often will you get paid.
• How will you get paid your affiliate commissions.

Depending on where you live, the payment threshold, and other things related to the financials, this could impact whether or not a  particular affiliate program is right for you. Some affiliate marketing programs pay their affiliates the commission rate instantly. Others pay monthly.

Others pay once you meet a specific threshold and some are run by affiliate networks that have their own rules on top of the rules set by the publisher or manufacturer of the product you promote. Be sure you have a full understanding of the payment process and particulars so you reduce frustration and disappointment.

Usability / Value

A big mistake some internet marketers make is that they don’t carefully review the products they plan to sell. If you don’t know anything beyond the sales page, you are not going to be in a very good position to sell.

Do yourself a favour and buy the product before you consider selling it. This way you’ll have a full comprehension of why others might want to buy it. This can help you avoid spending your time on something that will result in zero sales or high return rates as well.

Sales Tools

What type of affiliate tools does the company offer to help promote the product? Will you get access to PLR articles, creatives such as banners and widgets, instructional guides and videos, and will you have access to an affiliate marketer’s resource site? Sometimes this isn’t necessary, depending on how complex the product is, but consider which tools are available to help you sell an affiliate product before you take the plunge. Some programs really support their members whereas others don’t and the support could help you sell more.

Affiliate Marketing Programs – Reputation

What do other people say about the product you’re thinking about selling? If it generally has good reviews, chances are that people will be interested in buying it and that you’ll have a low return rate. Take the time to look before you leap and it will be time well invested. If there are names behind that product that are searchable, be sure that those names bring up solid reviews as well.

Product Competition

A product that’s too competitive will be difficult to gain favour with the search engines for organic search engine optimisation. A product that’s really obscure will take a lot of time and effort to market. Trying to find something in the middle can require a fine balance. Before starting to promote something, look at how competitive the market is.

When you are choosing affiliate marketing programs to participate in, look at how much demand for the product there is and whether or not there is room for more people to market the product. If there are under-serviced keyword phrases with potential and the product isn’t one that’s past its prime, you might be in a good position to take action.

Thanks for all of the above advice.
In the last paragraph you have touched on the vital importance of researching the product or service that any affiliate wishes to promote. If you can find a market that is under serviced there is great potential and also profits to be earned.

Another important thing to remember and what has been touched upon in this post is the connection that you feel to the product you are trying to market.

A great way to do this is just as Sean mentioned in using the product yourself – even if its a trial offer. Read other reviews and ensure that the product is seen in a positive light.

If you have some kind of ‘personal’ connection then it will be much easier to market the product. The readers will also be able to tell by the emotion you use if your approach to affiliate marketing is to write up a review.

Hi Sean,

It’s definitely not easy choosing the right affiliate marketing programs to get involved in. Thanks for the list of things to consider when looking for a product to market.

I think I’ve made enough mistakes choosing the wrong products and marketing them the wrong way. It’s time to move forward and start making some informed choices. This time I’m going to do a lot more research.

Hi Sean,
Advice on choosing a product here reminded me a little of the 3 bears. I shouldn’t choose a product that’s too competitive, or one that is too obscure. I need to find on that’s in the middle and is “just right” to be able to market.

I’m sure when I do find a suitable one it will be much easier to find the second. Is this correct Sean?

A timely reminder for those about to embark on a new career … researching all aspects is certainly the most important step to take. With so many affiliate marketing products and services to choose from this checklist is sure to be very handy. Including checking out the service that provides these services.

Hi Sean,
you put together some very important points to consider when choosing an affiliate marketing program that you want to go with.

Like offline, you should only recommend and market things you are happy with yourself, otherwise the bad reputation will come back to bite you long term …

Choosing the right affiliate marketing program seems to be the key to making it or not in this game. I can see the mistakes I have made in the past by just jumping into different programs without doing any research what so ever. I will definately be taking more time in this process.

I was wondering though, if my niche is babycare will I have to have another baby to test out the goods (I better tell my husband)- noooo way 3 is enough.

Hi Sean,

Thanks for the tips on choosing affiliate marketing programs as this is very important to avoid wasting time promoting things that just don’t work. Earlier this year I started promoting a system that you could almost call a scam where you get referral commissions for a free product.

After referring over 120 people I noticed that my commission amounts did not match up to what was expected so I proceeded to email the affiliate company in question but only to find out that commissions were paid for verified referrals from the U.S & most of my referrals were from abroad.

It really does pay to do your research on affiliate marketing programs before wasting precious time & resources!

Hey that bit about having to be certified referrals in the USA is something I hadn’t seen or thought of! I hope most of my target group is US located!

Regarding usability and value – is it a bit too much to actually buy and try? That could be very costly wouldn’t it?

And, is it always needed – e.g. if you are an affiliate related to travel (hotels, flights etc)?

I refer to testimonials that are usually on the sales page – as a way of adding more oomph – don’t know if that is effective or sifficient – but there is no way I could buy and try most products or services.

It may cost you initially Peter, it could also make you lots more money if you know the product well and can describe it accurately etc. I always recommend to actually own the product if you are serious about selling it. I also recommend not trying to sell loads of different products, focusing on a few great products that you have used is a better way to go in my opinion.
